I can´t wait for the garden to develop into a lush green oasis..
I´m longing for long afternoons and evenings on the wooden deck and always open for new ideas and insights in other peoples’ gardens. I´ll be a frequent visitor of your blog!

Site looks great. I’m reading a book called ‘Going Dutch’ about the Glorious Revolution and the invasion of England by William III and Mary Stuart in 1688. It’s amazing how often garden design comes into the narrative. William and the other Dutch & English lords were all obsessed with Royal gardens.
I hope to start working on the roof deck this Spring. I’ll make sure we get some irrigation up there. Any suggestions on what stays green in an highly variable climate zone in Northern New Jersey?
Roof gardens are especially tricky considering the harsh elements. A great place to start getting ideas is this site; http://www.urbanroofgardens.com/
Because plants are often exposed to extreme temperatures and wind, foremost you must think about the architectural elements which will make the space exciting. Investing in beautiful, long-lasting decking (Ipe comes to mind), furniture and lighting may be enough to create a useable outdoor space without the need for plants.
Ciao Helen,
Erin just forwarded me your blog link – great reading! Really enjoy your comments and I have only read the first page. If you ever need company on touring a garden or exhibit please contact me. So glad to have found someone who appreciates even the smallest details of man and nature.
Liebe Helen – when I look and walk out onto our small deck – I’m so thankful for your great idea to create a space for plants to be put into the soil directly instead of having lots of pots standing around. I will take a picture and send it to you – Tschuess from San Rafael, CA from Edith
Helen

Thank you. Sounds like a “must read” for a Dutch/American garden designer like me.
